Her work helps to better understand why ovaries may respond differently to hormone treatment and how fertility treatment could become more precise in the future.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etis.ee\/CV\/Agne_Velthut-Meikas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agne Velthut-Meikas\u2019<\/a>s <a href=\"https:\/\/healthandfood.taltech.ee\/en\/researches\/research-group-of-reproductive-biology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research group of reproductive biology<\/a> Varik studied extracellular vesicles \u2013 tiny particles that cells send to one another. \u201cIn simple terms, they can be described as message packages sent by cells, because they carry molecules that influence the behaviour of other cells,\u201d Varik explained.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The follicular fluid surrounding the maturing egg cell in the ovary helped her analyse these message packages. During fertility treatment, this fluid is collected when eggs are retrieved, but in everyday clinical practice it is usually not analysed in depth.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In her doctoral thesis, Varik compared, among other things, smaller and larger extracellular vesicles. The results showed that they are not merely random particles, but may carry different molecular information and perform different functions in the ovary.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>The same treatment does not produce the same result<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Before IVF, the ovaries are stimulated with hormones to obtain more eggs in one cycle than would normally mature. In some women, the expected number of eggs can be retrieved, while in others the result may be only two or three eggs, or even fewer.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Varik compared follicular fluid from women with an expected response to treatment and those with a weaker response. The analysis showed some differences in the contents of the extracellular vesicles found in the fluid. She paid particular attention to microRNAs, which affect gene activity and can thereby influence how cells function.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This difference does not mean, however, that a patient\u2019s response to treatment can already be predicted on the basis of follicular fluid. \u201cRather, the work helps us understand what may lie behind a weaker response,\u201d Varik said.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">According to Varik, follicular fluid is of interest to researchers precisely because it helps reveal the environment in which the egg cell develops. In fertility clinics, however, it is usually not examined in depth.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cThe fluid is collected in the clinic, but it is usually discarded after the procedure. Yet in cases of repeated failures or a weak response to treatment, this fluid could in the future provide valuable clues on how to personalise treatment more effectively,\u201d Varik emphasised.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">If more information could be obtained from the sample taken during the first treatment cycle, it could help plan the next steps more precisely. For this, however, follicular fluid needs to be studied in greater depth.<\/p>\r\nAccording to Varik, collecting samples for research is not simple: the fluid may become mixed with blood, and in clinics the fluid from several follicles is often collected together. At the same time, researchers would also be interested in whether, and how, different follicles in the same woman differ from one another.\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThe fluid is collected in the clinic, but it is usually discarded after the procedure. Yet in cases of repeated failures or a weak response to treatment, this fluid could in the future provide valuable clues on how to personalise treatment more effectively.\"<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>","image":null,"align":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":22997},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","type":"text","text":"<h4 class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Chemicals from plastics in the ovary<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The second important theme of the doctoral thesis concerned environmental chemicals. Varik studied phthalates \u2013 chemical compounds used, among other things, to make plastics softer and more flexible and to stabilise fragrances. Earlier studies by TalTech\u2019s reproductive biology research group have shown that traces of phthalates can be found in the follicular fluid of more than 90% of the Estonian women studied.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In her doctoral thesis, Varik focused on DEHP \u2013 a phthalate used in plastic products. Although the body excretes this chemical relatively quickly, everyday exposure to plastic packaging and cosmetic products may mean that DEHP enters the body again and again.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In samples with higher DEHP levels, changes were detected in processes important for egg maturation, including the production of cholesterol and steroid hormones. A stronger immune signal also indicated that the follicle may have a more inflammatory environment. This is significant in the context of fertility treatment, because the egg cell develops in the follicular environment, whose condition may also affect how the ovary responds to hormone treatment.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Varik sees no reason for panic, but she does recommend making more conscious choices where possible. For example, food should not be heated in plastic containers, and it is better not to drink from a plastic bottle that has been left in a car on a hot day. Caution is also advisable with cosmetic products of unknown origin. \u201cI would recommend reducing the use of various plastic products and being especially careful with cosmetic and skincare products ordered from Temu or AliExpress, for example. With such products, it may not always be clear what chemicals they contain.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The broader message of the doctoral thesis is that the egg cell\u2019s surrounding environment is not separate from the external environment. Chemical substances that people encounter in everyday life \u2013 through plastic products, packaging or cosmetics, for example \u2013 may also reach it.<\/p>\r\nFor this reason, fertility research helps us understand not only why fertility treatment may produce different outcomes, but also highlights the need to study new chemicals and their substitutes more thoroughly. The better researchers understand what happens in the environment surrounding the egg cell, the more precise and effective fertility treatment may become in the future.\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cI would recommend reducing the use of various plastic products and being especially careful with cosmetic and skincare products ordered from Temu or AliExpress, for example.
