How can TalTech be shaped over the next decade into a driving force that cultivates engineers, generates technologies, and connects science with entrepreneurship? This question was tackled during the TalTech development strategy discussion \u201cTalTech 2035 \u2013 Estonia\u2019s Growth Platform of the Future?\u201d by Vice-Rector for Entrepreneurship Erik Puura, Tehnopol CEO Agnes Roos, Head of the Innovation and Technology Department at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications Sigrid Rajalo, and TalTech Council member and CFO of the tech company Helmes, Madis Margus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":15270,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[252],"tags":[393,600,429,397,424,402,582,475],"class_list":["post-17728","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-society","tag-education","tag-hargettevotted-en","tag-haridus-en","tag-innovation","tag-innovatsioon-en","tag-spin-off","tag-taltech-en","tag-tehnopol-en"],"acf":{"postbuilder":[{"acf_fc_layout":"text","type":"text","text":"

The university of technology as a driving force of society<\/h4>\r\n

According to TalTech's vice-rector for entrepreneurship, Erik Puura<\/a>, the most important aspect in drafting the development strategy has been to define the university\u2019s true role: \u201cIf you ask why a university truly exists, I feel it most clearly every June, when I get to hand out diplomas to hundreds of young people. In that moment \u2013 when you see each of them shining and ready to step into the world \u2013 the essence of the university becomes evident.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Puura says TalTech has made a significant leap in the past five years, but the next step must be to increase the impact of knowledge on society. \u201cWe need to create the best possible learning experience for students \u2013 one where they can already participate in real projects during their studies, as has been the case with the solar car, student formula, and student satellite.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

According to Puura, TalTech\u2019s real economic impact is largely manifested through its alumni, but it is just as important to connect science and entrepreneurship. The university can produce top-level graduates only if their quality stems from researchers who teach at the university, and if the researchers\u2019 work is closely tied to applied research and spin-off entrepreneurship, so that science finds its way into the economy and brings tangible benefits to society.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

The ambition must be big<\/h4>\r\n

According to Sigrid Rajalo, head of the innovation and technology department at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications<\/a>, TalTech\u2019s development plan should be ambitious and forward-looking \u2013 even if not all goals can be achieved immediately: \u201cI know the state is often criticized for setting overly ambitious targets that resources can\u2019t keep up with, but to borrow from teacher Laur \u2013 it\u2019s already a great success if even half of the ambition becomes reality.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

In her view, TalTech should aim to become a world-class birthplace of technologies \u2013 a place where students come not just to study, but to experiment and create for real. To realize such a vision, a strong scientific backbone is needed. \u201cFrontline technologies don\u2019t emerge without top-level science. Be it the green transition, defense technologies, or crisis prevention \u2013 TalTech has the opportunity to leave its mark.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Rajalo believes Estonia\u2019s innovation system should be shaped in a way that research results reach practice faster. There should be greater reliance on smart funding solutions and investments that help companies grow and give researchers the confidence that valuable ideas will be seen through to the end.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Science and business must go hand in hand<\/h4>\r\n

According to Tehnopol<\/a> CEO Agnes Roos, TalTech's 2035 goals should be centered on three core principles: top-level education, strong research, and entrepreneurship born out of science. A university cannot exist without research, but science alone cannot create societal impact. \u201cIf by 2035 TalTech were to generate 200\u2013300 spin-offs annually, it would mean that our research has produced solutions that bring real economic value,\u201d Roos emphasized.<\/p>\r\n

She noted that collaboration between researchers and entrepreneurs has significantly intensified over the past year, particularly through the deep tech program being developed jointly by TalTech and Tehnopol. This kind of practical, day-to-day cooperation helps create a situation where spin-off creation is no longer an exception but a natural part of research. Roos added that companies born out of scientific work should be valued at the university on par with scientific publications \u2013 this would offer researchers additional motivation. Tehnopol\u2019s role is to provide a support network through which researchers can get help from mentors, investors, and co-founders with business experience.<\/p>\r\n

She also pointed out that quality arises from quantity: \u201cIf we created 200 spin-offs a year, there would be future unicorns among them. Without a broad base, there are no breakthroughs.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Helmes<\/a> CFO and TalTech council member Madis Margus stated that at the heart of the university are people and the processes that support them. In his view, ten years from now TalTech should have more students and staff, but most importantly, the number of satisfied people should increase: \u201cSatisfied students and staff create a growth-oriented organization.\u201d He also highlighted that students\u2019 financial well-being is currently a clear structural issue that needs to be addressed systematically.<\/p>\r\n

Margus stressed that staff must also be competitive, motivated, and ready to collaborate with companies. In addition, he believes a more modern and efficient infrastructure is needed. TalTech\u2019s development should reflect purposeful growth, and as a result, the university\u2019s revenue base could ideally double over the next ten years.<\/p>\r\n

He believes that the university needs to engage closely with companies and act jointly with them. The fact that most of the people recently hired at Helmes are TalTech alumni clearly illustrates, in his view, the university\u2019s impact on the labor market. However, Margus argued that collaboration between researchers and businesses should become more flexible and faster, as scientific ideas should reach practical solutions as smoothly as possible.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/article>\r\n

A new grand mission<\/h4>\r\n

At the end of the panel, moderator Silver Tambur raised the question: if Estonia had one shared technological goal that united TalTech, entrepreneurs, and the state, what could it be? Rajalo noted that trying to achieve everything at once usually doesn\u2019t lead to success: \u201cWe don\u2019t have to be just as good as others in everything, but we must find our own niches \u2013 whether in chip design or something else. Innovation is impossible without risk, and without taking risks, nothing new emerges.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

According to Margus, a major objective could be the creation of an engineering endowment \u2013 an initiative that would foster the next generation of engineers and unite the university, businesses, and society behind a shared goal. He believes such an effort can only succeed through collaboration between entrepreneurs, the state, and private investors.<\/p>\r\n

Puura acknowledged that TalTech must stay true to its original identity \u2013 a university of technology that fulfills the purpose it was founded for. \u201cThe mission of the Technical University of Denmark has remained unchanged since 1829 \u2013 they do their thing and do it well.\u201d He pointed out that many of Europe\u2019s strongest technical universities, including Eindhoven and Munich, have grown through close cooperation with major companies that invest in bridging science and business: \u201cIn Estonia, what we lack is a flagship company willing to take the lead in supporting a university and contributing systematically to its ecosystem.\u201d The next major goal, he suggested, could be finding a partner of that caliber.<\/p>\r\n

Roos emphasized that society\u2019s attitude toward failure also needs to change. In her view, it\u2019s natural that not every scientific experiment leads to the desired outcome \u2013 it\u2019s precisely through trial and error that science progresses. According to Roos, this trial-and-error approach should also apply in entrepreneurship: if a science-based idea doesn\u2019t work in one business model, it might still succeed in another.<\/p>\r\n
