The oils produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/aio.bio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00c4IO<\/a> can be used not only in the food industry but also in cosmetics, for example.\r\n<h4><strong>A real milestone<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"143\">In September, \u00c4IO reached a new milestone: the company produced its first batch of yeast-based alternative oil, with a total volume of one ton.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"145\" data-end=\"674\">This marked a successful transition from lab-scale experiments to industrial production. Although the company initially planned to build its own demo facility, that idea was set aside due to the emergence of a biorefinery center in Estonia offering the necessary services. This allows \u00c4IO to focus its resources directly on product development and start preparing for market entry. In the long term, the goal is full-scale production. Market entry depends on two key factors: the raw materials used to produce the oils, and companies\u2019 willingness to experiment with new, more environmentally friendly solutions.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"855\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Lahtvee highlighted two main objectives: on the one hand, ensuring food security and maintaining production in Estonia and the surrounding region; on the other, reaching markets with both a high availability of by-products and a strong demand for alternative raw materials. Currently, there are no clear criteria on the academic career ladder that recognize involvement in entrepreneurship or the founding of a spin-off. According to Lahtvee, career advancement mainly focuses on scientific publications, organizing international conferences, and supervising PhD students: \u201eYou have dozens of different tasks to fulfill, but none of the criteria relate to entrepreneurship. It\u2019s considered more of an extra activity, which certainly doesn\u2019t motivate research group leaders.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"1005\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Lahtvee emphasized that those driving spin-off entrepreneurship don\u2019t necessarily have to lead a research group themselves. Instead, they could help build a supportive environment and mechanisms that give younger researchers the opportunity to realize their ideas. Such balance helps maintain focus and ensures progress in both directions.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"376\" data-end=\"638\">At the same time, Lahtvee encouraged researchers to test their ideas: \u201eYou don\u2019t have to jump on every new idea, but if you wake up several mornings in a row with the same thought and it won\u2019t leave you alone, that\u2019s the right moment to try bringing it to life.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"640\" data-end=\"891\">He stressed that the journey from idea to execution isn\u2019t easy\u2014it takes time, energy, and continuous learning, especially for those with an academic background. But if your gut tells you it\u2019s the right thing, it\u2019s worth moving forward with confidence.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"893\" data-end=\"1197\">One of the biggest lessons Lahtvee has learned so far is the importance of paying attention to legal details from the very beginning. At the start, it\u2019s easy to sign documents that don\u2019t seem important or whose implications aren\u2019t fully clear, but they can later cause problems or hinder business growth.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1482\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">According to Lahtvee, \u00c4IO was born from the desire to see whether scientific research could lead to practical benefits.
